Tormek Sharpeners FAQs

What’s the difference between the Tormek T4 vs T8?

The Tormek T8 uses a full-size zinc housing, tighter tolerances, and a continuous-duty motor that holds angles with more stability. The Tormek T4 is lighter, more portable, and limited to 30 minutes per hour of run time. Both use the same jigs, but the T8 offers a steadier platform for heavier shop use. If you sharpen often or rely on repeatability, the T8 will feel more solid in day-to-day work.

How does a Tormek sharpening system work?

A Tormek sharpener uses a slow-turning, water-cooled grindstone to shape the bevel and a leather honing wheel to remove the burr. Water keeps the edge cool and prevents burning or losing temper. Jigs hold your tools at a fixed angle so you can repeat the same edge every time. The system is built for controlled grinding rather than fast metal removal.

What is the benefit of Tormek's water-cooled sharpening?

Water cools the steel so the bevel never overheats or turns blue. It also washes steel particles into the trough rather than into the air. This gives you cleaner cuts, a safer edge, and a cleaner shop environment. The slower wheel speed and water cooling also make the sharpening process easier to control.

What types of tools can a Tormek sharpen?

Tormek T8 and T4 machines handle knives, chisels, plane irons, turning tools, carving tools, scissors, and axes with the correct Tormek jig. The jigs keep angles steady, which is especially helpful on gouges and specialty shapes. Because the wheels run slowly in water, you can work right up to the edge without risking burns. The range of compatible jigs is the same on the T4 and T8.

What’s the difference between the Tormek wheels?

The Tormek T8 comes with a full-size 250 mm SG grindstone, and the Tormek T4 comes with a 200 mm version of the same stone; both can be graded coarse for shaping or fine for sharpening. If you want faster steel removal or a wheel that never needs truing, the Tormek diamond wheels (coarse, fine, and extra-fine) are the better fit. If you want a mirror-polished edge on carving tools or plane irons, the Japanese waterstone delivers the finest finish. Every setup finishes on the leather honing wheel, which removes the burr and brings the edge to a durable, razor-sharp polish. The choice comes down to whether you want versatility (SG), speed and flatness (diamond), or the highest possible polish (Japanese stone).
